Can you believe we are just a few days away from June? I personally cannot. I mean, this is already the third week of our Summer Daze series! Don’t be too sad though, this is probably my favorite post that I’ve ever written! Too bad it has nothing to do with the shop… 🙂
One of my favorite activities in the summer is taking an hour or so each weekend and bringing my book outside to soak in some sunshine. To add to the relaxation factor, I like to add an adult beverage. My drink of choice for this – a mojito.
The perfect drink for summer, the mojito is neither a “girly” drink, nor anything too masculine or heavy. Combine that with the fact that this may be the most refreshing beverage in the history of beverages, and you have the recipe for an epic afternoon!
I’ve never been one to drink cocktails, especially at home, because they are expensive, intricate, and time consuming. The mojito gets a bad reputation being lumped in with that kind of thought process. Ingredients, depending on your choice of rum, are inexpensive and even if you have no experience growing herbs, mint is very cheap and easy to grow! Another perk of this drink! Once you’ve made one or two, you’ll wonder where these have been all your life!
Nothing Past Nine’s Signature Mojito
Ingredients:
- Crushed Ice
- Pineapple flavored white rum
- Fresh Mint Leaves
- Lime Juice
- Club Soda
- White Sugar
- Lime Wedge (for garnish)
- Mint Sprig (for garnish)
Instructions:
Fill a 16 oz glass (pint glasses work really well!) 2/3 full of crushed ice. Place 4-5 large mint leaves on top of the ice. Pour in 2 oz of rum, and muddle ice, mint and rum. Add 2-3 oz of lime juice (I like my mojitos very limey), and top off with club soda. Stir in sugar to taste. Personally, I use 1 or 2 tablespoons. If you’re feeling fancy, add a lime wedge or sprig of mint leaves as a garnish before enjoying!
Now, as with any cocktail, there are unlimited variations and you can tailor the alcohol content to your liking. I tend to go lighter on the rum and just drink more cocktails! A newer modification in my house has been using citrus flavored sparkling waters instead of club soda. This is a great change of pace and as a bonus, if those are already sugared, it takes out one step of the cocktail recipe!
